Utilis Satellite Leak Detection

Water Matrix Inc. has partnered with Utilis Inc. to bring the latest in drinking water leak detection technology to North America. Utilis Inc. is an innovative water management company based in Israel which has developed a revolutionary new way of detecting non-revenue water leaks by analyzing spectral images from satellites.

This innovative and patented technology has been adapted from the search for water on other planets, underscoring its high reliability and outstanding capability here on earth. Utilis offers a fresh approach which provides a non-invasive, innovative method to the problem of urban water leakage. When compared with any other current non-revenue water solution available to water managers, satellite based leak detection will identify more water leaks in the same amount of time.

Wasted Water

Around the world, 46 billion liters of drinking water are lost every day. With over 700 water main breaks in the US alone, and without a method of proactively taking action against treated water leaks, utility managers are left reacting to unforeseen issues.

Current Solutions

The most prevalent leak detection tools in use today are smart water management system and acoustic leak detection. While tried and tested, these approaches are notoriously time-consuming and prohibitively expensive.

Using these methods, managers are simply left to react to anomalies in their water management systems, or respond to a distressed call from a citizen informing them of a burst pipe.

Introducing Utilis

Applying technology used to detect water on distant planets, we are able to distinguish and prevent treated water leaks here on earth. Our revolutionary satellite imaging technology paired with proprietary data analysis algorithms, result in an efficient, and holistic, view of an urban grid with no upfront cost, and no infrastructure investment.

Our Method

Satellite Image Acquisition

Raw satellite images of the area are acquired.

Radiometric Corrections

Raw data is prepared for analysis, filtering bounces from buildings and other manmade objects, vegetation hydrologic objects, and more.

Algorithmic Analysis

Utilis uses advanced algorithmic analysis to track the spectral “signature” of potable water in the ground.

Web Based App and Intuitive UI

The leaks are displayed in user friendly GIS reports including street locations and leak size.

The Result

The result is much lower operational costs for reducing non-revenue water. It allows for water managers to spend their budgets more efficiently by being able to look at an urban grid in its entirety, from a bird’s-eye view.
